Shout Out: Sunday Jungle Market

It is that wonderful time of the year, the time when the Sunday Jungle Market starts up for the season. That’s why this week’s SHOUT OUT goes out to the Sunday Jungle Market as it begins Sunday, December 22, 2019, and runs every Sunday throughout the high season.

The Sunday Jungle Market was the brainchild of Sandra, the creator and curator of the Jungle Spa. She wanted a way for visitors to Puerto Morelos to get involved with the community, to meet the people one on one and to learn some of the Mayan traditions. Not what you really expect from a market, the Sunday Jungle Market is so much more.

Local Tip: A taxi from the square is only 60 pesos. Tell the driver you want to go to see Sandra (important to mention her name) at the Jungle Market on Calle Dos.

Yes, there are wonderful local foods and crafts that you can buy, but there is also a dance show the contains plenty of surprises. And this year Sandra promises a new “merging of the cultures” dance show that is bound to be fun and entertaining.

There is no admission fee, but the money you spend goes toward supporting local families. The market is held at the same location as the Jungle Spa. You can get there by car or taxi.

Christmas in La Colonia

Here is a quick peek (as promised here) of the Christmas lights in the main town square in La Colonia. Click here if you missed our post on the Christmas lights on the port side. (Click any photo to see it full screen)

Santa’s village in the North Pole now has a sister city here in Puerto Morelos!

Complete with a place for Santa to warm his toes! We are sure there are more than a few kids in town that can’t wait for Santa to arrive.

There is a huge Christmas tree with a nativity scene below it. And as per tradition here in Puerto Morelos, there is no baby Jesus under the tree… because, of course, he hasn’t been born yet. So we will all wait for Him to show up on the 24th of December.

Plus there are some great places for photo ops, so if you get a chance make sure you make it over to the park in La Colonia. (And watch for Santa)

SHOUTOUT: The Burger Underground

What started out as an idea in Joe’s kitchen, quickly grew to the most popular delivery service in Puerto Morelos, The Burger Underground. Now Joe has made the big leap from delivery only to a full-service restaurant that has some of the best burgers in town.

Serving good, hot food, fast, The Burger Underground makes each order individually. So, even though you can get your burger quickly, should you be in a hurry, each burger is still custom made to your individual preferences. Along with top-quality fresh ingredients, the buns are sourced locally in Puerto Morelos and are baked specifically for The Burger Underground every day.

With a creative, very local menu (can you figure out who the CJ SUNDAY is named after?) The Burger Underground has everything from your “not so basic” cheeseburger to The Yanik, which features a beef patty topped with Oaxaca cheese, gravy and fries right on the burger! Maybe just a little taste of poutine in there.

The Burger Underground is also making a conscious effort to be environmentally friendly. They wrap their burgers in paper and do not use styrofoam or plastic containers.

Local Tip: You can substitute the beef patty in any burger for chicken or a veggie burger.

Christmas in Puerto Morelos

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Puerto Morelos, minus the snow. We thought we would share a few pictures of the town square, on the port side, so you could get a little taste of what Christmas is like in the tropics.

It is nice to see the square decorated. Even the nativity scene is set up below the big shiny tree. But the question is, “Will the baby Jesus make a guest appearance under the tree this year?” (Hint: He didn’t last year, must have been somebody’s day off!)

We will have more holiday updates coming up for you from In Puerto Morelos. The square in the Colonia has an entire Christmas village and a big Christmas Posada is coming to the town soon.

New Chedraui: A Photo Essay

For those of you who aren’t in Puerto Morelos right now, we thought we would share with you some photos of the new Chedraui supermarket that just opened on the port side of our little town. Here are a few photos that we took as we watched the building of the store progress.

It all began on what was once was a vacant lot, occasionally used to park cars, store old equipment or host giant mud puddles…

And then only one day later than predicted, Puerto Morelos had its second Chedraui. A Chedraui Selecto. It is slightly smaller and a little fancier than the one on the highway. It features a smaller selection of groceries and produce than the other Chedraui. It appears to have a pretty good meat counter, decent wine selection, a cigar humidor and a fresh bakery.

Opening Day: November 30, 2018

There is a cafe with coffee and gelato. A place that makes custom sandwiches and a sushi counter. There is a cevicheria with ceviche and seafood. You can buy a bag of fresh popcorn or a hotdog. There is a special section that has a decent beer selection including craft and imports, plus you can have a glass of draft in the middle of the store!

There are no appliances, electronics or auto accessories. They have focused on beach-goers with sections selling coolers, sunscreens (including reef friendly ones) and beach toys. There is a small pharmacy.

It is located on the port side of town, half a block south of the square with access either Rojo Gomez or Rafael Malgar. Click here for a Google Map.

Open daily from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.

It is nice to have the new Chedraui on the port side, but we will continue to support our local small businesses, like the Fruteria which was featured in this weeks SHOUT OUT.

SHOUT OUT to the Frutería

This week’s SHOUT OUT goes out to our local frutería or fruit store on the port side of town. Tucked away on Ave Niños Heroes this little store is easy to miss, but don’t. This small space is packed with some of the tastiest fruits and vegetables you will ever have.

The always friendly Alexis and his aunt Bricis and Enrique restock their shop daily with fresh fruits and vegetables. But the real treat is their fresh squeezed juices. You can choose from orange, grapefruit, green, carrot or beet with carrot, all at a very reasonable price.

Plus they have an excellent selection of aguas de frutas (fruit waters) in orange, oatmeal, watermelon, lime, pineapple, mango, passion fruit, guava or jamaica (hibiscus, a local flower).

Local Tip: For great guacamole just ask Bricis, she is the best at picking out avocados! Tell her if you want them for “hoy” or “mañana”

In the mornings they offer precut fruit for breakfast.

They also carry a selection of dried peppers. Plus they have fresh eggs, spices and well, you just never know what you will find.

This store is so small that if you blink you will miss it, but it is big on selection. Located on Ave Niños Heroes, close to the lavandería (laundry) and across from the restaurant Puerto Verde. The frutería is open from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Saturday.

Beach Reads Town Update: New Chedraui Store

Hola! Here’s another Beach Reads Update from your favourite town.

We’re just starting to get busy here in town as snowbirds return to Puerto Morelos and the town gears up for Christmas and the busy tourist season.

We’ve been mostly obsessed with watching the new Chedraui grocery store going up just south of the square. Less than a month ago we posted an update that showed workers pouring the concrete floors, finishing the roof and siding the building with stone. They have made incredible progress since then. Officials tell us the fully-stocked Selecto store will open on UPDATE: They opened Friday morning. Details and pics coming soon.

Here’s a look inside from the evening of November 26. This appears to be the cafe area.

Just beyond the cafe is a sushi bar. To the right, you can see the cash registers…just six of them.

We’ve been worried about parking at the new store, as there are not many spots. There IS, however, very convenient parking for cyclists. This is just outside the front door.

More surprisingly perhaps, there is parking for your dog!

There is also special parking for folks who order online. It appears that you will order your stuff, park in the special spot, announce your arrival on the nearby intercom and they will bring your order.

Construction is also underway on several small shops on the east side of the building.

We talked to one of the bosses at the site and he was positive the store will open on UPDATE: Opened Friday morning. Details and pics coming soon.

Shout Out: Polo in Puerto

This week’s “SHOUT OUT” goes to El Rey Polo Country Club, Puerto Morelos’s home to one of the top Polo facilities in all of Mexico. Surprise! We bet you didn’t know that you can watch one of the world’s oldest known team sports in our little beach town.

Located on the Ruta de Cenotes, just after KM 11, El Rey Polo Country Club is a beautiful facility. Besides having a world-class polo field, they also have exclusive restaurants (open only during events), a wine pavilion (open only for events), a large outdoor pool and the facilities to hold concerts.

Local Tip: You will need a car or taxi to get to this location

Holding several matches a year, El Rey Polo Country Club. has one of their biggest events happening on December 7th. It is the 11th Annual Copa del Rey to celebrate their 11th anniversary. The day will begin with a polo and will be followed by music in the evening.

NEVER MISS A POST

General tickets for the day are 350 pesos and 600 pesos which includes entrance to the polo and the music events. Your ticket also includes a donation to the local DIF, a charity that works on family development.

And yes, this is a bit of a fancy affair! Not only is there a hat contest, but there is also a dress code requesting that you wear white. If you want to kick it up a notch, you can buy VIP tickets are 3000 pesos which includes a table for up to 5 people, bottle service, entrance to the music festival and the kids club.
