Hola from your favourite town on the Caribbean in Mexico! We’re sorry that a lot of you were unable to make it down this year. We miss you terribly and hope you are making plans to visit us next year at least. We are happily taking reservations for 2022 right now, and we’re hoping for a normal season next year.

Borders and the airports in Mexico never closed and we are seeing a number of visitors in Puerto Morelos. The state uses a “traffic light” system to monitor covid in our area. The lights are red, orange, yellow and green. We are currently under a yellow light which is second only to green. This means that there are some restrictions on us, but not too many.

Click any photo for a full screen view. Worth it!

The beach and all restaurants are open, with some social distance restrictions. Masks are required when entering any business or transport. We’re all pretty used to it by now and we all have a larger collection of masks than we ever thought we would own.

Governments in Canada, the US and other countries are requiring a negative Covid test in order to return home. Luckily, those tests are available in town and even at the airport. Click this link for more info.

The town is pretty quiet for February, which is normally the height of our tourism season. It is definitely quieter than usual here, but in general, Puerto Morelos is a great place to be. We’re even seeing some new businesses opening. Two new restaurants are opening on Rojo Gomez. They are both racing to get ready to open right now.

Spyder Cafe is an unusual concept. It’s a small chain that originated in Spain but is now focusing on expansion in Mexico. They are a combination cafe, bar, rental outlet for electric bikes and tattoo parlour. While it is a chain, the location is owned by a long-time Puerto Morelian who grew up here. Spyder Cafe already has a location in Tulum and they are planning locations in Playa del Carmen, Cancun and all over Mexico.

Spyder Cafe is built into this shipping container and created quite a scene when it was dropped into place one recent Saturday morning.

Spyder Cafe has a large breakfast menu and most of their evening menu focuses on burgers, but there are salads too. Check out their menu here. They hope to open in early March. They are also hosting a parking lot next door, which will be very welcome in PM.

Right next to them, in the old Don Pepe’s Ole space, (next to the Godfather jewelry store) is a new taco place. It’s also a small chain out of Cancun called Los Chachalacos. They promise tacos and beer. Here’s a look at their complete menu from their website.

As we told you in our last update, the popular El Campanario restaurant is also moving to Rojo Gomez, almost across the street from these new places. They will open in this new spot on March 3, and (surprise!), they will now be offering breakfast too. This will make Rojo Gomez a juggernaut for restaurants in Puerto Morelos, from Unico & Diving Lodge Downtown in the north to Spaghettino in the south.

Amor y Pez features eye-catching murals…

A new place opened on Ninos Heroes as well. Amor y Pez opened in the location that used to be The Burger Underground (The burgers moved to Rojo Gomez). We watched this restaurant’s progress as they got ready to open, creating their cool wall fish-themed wall mural. They opened to great fanfare on February 26 by offering 2X1 on their whole menu. (Menu photo courtesy of Lynn Warner)

That funny-looking vehicle in the photo is actually a portable ceviche factory! You can spot it on the road, or at its home on Rojo Gomez, just south of the Mayan Handicraft Centre. The owners are also working on a barbeque restaurant at the same location. They promise brisket “Mexican style”. You’ve got our interest!

We told you back in December’s issue of Beach Reads about a new little restaurant on Rojo Gomez called Fit & Fat. It appears they have changed their name to Che Itza. They are open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Work continues on a new place moving into the DK container and a new beer and wings place in the highway Chedraui mall. Puerto Morelos Fish Market restaurant has re-opened as well after some renovations.

Construction of our new square is not done by any stretch, but work is progressing much more rapidly than it has in the last several months.

Here’s a general idea of what they are building. The plan in the photo is not quite accurate, but you can see the stage in the upper left corner. It is surrounded by a lot of tiered seating. The bathrooms are being built closer to Rojo Gomez and the playground area is almost directly across the street from the bookstore. Click any pic for a larger view.

Quick action by many first responders and neighbours prevented more damage from that palapa fire that broke out on January 24. We wrote a full post about it here. One souvenir store owned by our friend Thomas was damaged heavily. The store supports his extended family.

They are slowly repairing and rebuilding. In the meantime, they are selling their wares in front of their store. They need our support, so please consider buying something from Thomas and his family.

There is a lot to love in this beer-themed display at the Chedraui grocery store on the highway. If you don’t love beer, those roses are a pretty good deal too. A bunch of six is less than $3 USD.

Noticed this new clinic is opening in the Super Aki Plaza. I can’t find a web page for this location, but they appear to be related to the Victoria Hospital in Cancun.

Managed to catch the last set of the popular local duo, “The Nobodies” at Lauro’s on Rojo Gomez. Singer Sebastian is also half of “Parking Free” and has some of his original music on Spotify. He’s releasing a new song on March 5. Click here for more info.

Shoutout to the bike shop near the square in the Colonia. It actually has a name, it’s called “Bike & Ride”, but there’s no sign, though the bikes parked in front let you know that they’re open for business. They even have a website.
I thought my bike might be ready for the scrap heap. It had broken spokes, a creaky pedal array, wimpy brakes and it was emitting a series of somewhat disconcerting noises. The techs at Bike & Ride breathed new life into my wheels in just a few hours and for a reasonable pile of pesos. They had the knowledge and the parts in stock which saved a lot of time.
Check ’em out. Your old ride might be better than you think! (Now the only disconcerting noises originate from the rider, not the ride)

And our usually full vacation rentals at Casa de los Viajeros have loads of space this year! We are normally booked more than a year in advance (we are taking bookings for 2022 now), but not this year. So if you would like to visit Puerto Morelos and support us, be sure to book a stay in one of our apartments. We have a fantastic location! We hope to see you all in Puerto Morelos soon. Hasta pronto!

13. January 2021 · Comments Off on Covid Tests in Puerto Morelos · Categories: Beach Reads The Blog

Starting in January, you will need to show the results of a negative Covid test in order to board your flight back to Canada or the USA.

Luckily, we have at least three local options to get this test. The cost ranges depending on which test you need and you can pay a little more in some cases and they will come to you. It’s very important that you get the right test. You will not be permitted to board the place without negative results using the correct test. *Costamed in Puerto Morelos and Amerimed in Cancun can do an antigen test which is cheaper, (around $1000 pesos) and will satisfy officials if you are flying into the US. Canadians need a PCR test.

Here’s a link with more info for Canadians from Canada.ca

Here’s a link with more info for people from the USA from the CDC and here.

Please note, we are providing this information for your convenience, but we have no experience with any of these options, except we did have guests test at Costamed successfully. We’ll add more information as we receive it.

At the Airport

You can get tested at the airport. It’s recommended you arrive early to make sure you have enough time to receive it. Only the antigen test will give you same-day results. The test costs approximately $290.00 pesos PER ANTIGEN TEST and approximately $2000.00 pesos PER PCR TEST. They are open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM EVERYDAY. First come – First Serve. NO appointments available. It takes approximately 30-60 minutes for the ANTIGEN results, and approximately 24-48 hours for the PCR Test. Most travel experts recommend you only test at the airport as a last resort. You are much better off to have your test results in hand when you arrive at the airport. One concern I would have would be, what if you had an “unexpected” result to your test? That would be very bad news to receive just before you were about to board a plane home. Obviously, you would not be allowed on the flight. This page has more info and you can read more here and here.

Farmacias del Ahorro a large chain of pharmacies with locations in Playa del Carmen and Cancun is offering antigen tests (ok for flights to USA, not Canada) for a very good price, $347 pesos including tax. Not all locations are offering the test and you may have to get there very early to make an appointment. They may streamline their operation, keep an eye on their website linked above, but at this time it would not be a practical choice for PM visitors.

16. January 2019 · Comments Off on Swoop! · Categories: Beach Reads The Blog, Travel

Looking for a super cheap way to get to Cancun? (The closest airport to Puerto Morelos) Swoop, has just taken off.

Swoop is the budget arm of Canadian airline West Jet. It is touted as an “ultra-low cost carrier”. And it is cheap! Today when we punched in a flight from Hamilton, Ontario to Cancun, it gave us a rate of $261.83 CDN ($197 USD) RETURN!

The catch is they are currently only flying from Hamilton to Cancun. The other catch is that you have to add some fees. It costs more to pick your seat, but this can be as low as $16 CDN ($12USD). They also charge $36.40 CDN ($27.44 USD) for a carry-on and another $36.40 CDN ($27.44 USD) for a checked bag.

Plus there is an optional extra $10.40 CDN ($7.84 USD) if you want a boarding card and an extra $10.00 CDN ($7.54 USD) for priority seating. But even after adding all this, we still managed to get a flight for $363.83 CDN ($274 USD) with a checked bag, return.

That is a very good rate. We hope to see them to expand more cities soon. You can check them out on their website. It may just make you want to Swoop down and visit us InPuertoMorelos.

This week’s SHOUT OUT goes to PM’s premier private tour guide, Eric at Ecab Explorer.

Many of our guests at Casa de los Viajeros ask us about tours to the see the many attractions of our area including ancient ruins, swimming with whale sharks, seeing flamingos or cruising on a boat through the jungle.

Eric is PM’s most experienced tour guide and he has thoughtfully crafted his tours to provide the best possible experience for his guests. Originally from France, Eric fell in love with Mexico many years ago and has made Puerto Morelos his home. He has a curiosity and enthusiasm about the area that is infectious and his vast knowledge means no question goes unanswered.

Local Tip: Eric speaks Spanish, English and French

Eric offers small group tours to the popular ruin sites of Chichen Itza, Coba, Ek Balam and Tulum, but he also offers unique tours you may not have thought about. You can visit the flamingoes at Rio Lagartos Reserve, or discover the uncharted Mayan ruins of Holbox, enjoy a boat ride from Punta Allen through Sian Ka’an to see aquatic birds nesting, sea turtles and dolphins swimming or visit the Mayan site of Muyil for a walk through the jungle, and a boat ride down a lazy river.

In the summer months, you can swim with the whale sharks, an amazing adventure.

Make sure you reserve your tours with Eric early as he does book up in the high season months. You can reach him through his website or his Facebook page. Private tours and van rentals for shopping trips or larger group airport pickups may also be booked through Ecab Explorer.

This post is part of a new feature where we will send a SHOUT OUT, highlighting a local business, person or experience to enhance your time In Puerto Morelos. Look for the “local hint” for insider tips.

If you would like to be a part of this feature or suggest a SHOUT OUT, click here to find out how you can join in on the fun!

We still have some good dates available for 2019!

A grande “Hola!” from your favourite Mexican village and the latest news from Puerto Morelos. The busy part of the season is now over, and PM is “downshifting” into our summer season. It’s warm, quiet and uncrowded. A great time of year to be here! Stay with us at Casa de los Viajeros! Check out our very low summer rates!

The Big Dig

The big news is the continued renovation of the roads in the centre of town. It’s a very ambitious plan to bury all the utilities around the square, finish all the sewer connections and create new, stamped concrete roads & sidewalks. Like any renovation, it has caused some pain and inconvenience. Most businesses around the square bravely stayed open as much as possible, and spent a lot of time dusting and re-cleaning their windows. The work is not completed yet, so traffic is still being diverted and parking is difficult. In the end though, we will have much wider sidewalks for strolling and for the restaurants to use. We’re all looking forward to the work being completed!

The Colonia has been undergoing renovations as well. Roads are being paved, and many of the streets are now one-way. There is still a good amount of confusion over what direction traffic is supposed to flow, so be aware if you are driving there. The main roads close to the square are fairly well marked, but others are not. There are also some new, much needed parking restrictions near the square that are being cheerfully ignored so far.

Restaurant News

Amazingly, we continue to gain restaurants here in Puerto Morelos! At least four have just opened, or are in the process of opening. Hard to believe as we are just starting our low season!

We told you about “A la Burger” back in December. We thought their opening was imminent, but they took their time and finally opened about a week ago. They are a small chain from Cancun, but so far, they have been a hit in our town too. Burgers are hot and tasty, service is prompt and prices are low. They have a “fixin’s” bar when you can customize your meal. They have meal combos that are an especially good deal. You can get a burger with fries and a cold beer for 89 pesos or slightly less if you opt for a soft drink. You can sit out front or they have a pleasant garden area out back. Most of their menu is dominated by burgers, but they also have wings, salads, tacos, big onion rings and grilled meats. Al la Burger is located on Rojo Gomez, about a block and a half north of the square, right beside “I Wanna Pizza”. They are open every day from 1:00pm to 11:40pm. (Not sure why it’s 11:40, but that is what they told us.)

On the same street, closer to the square you will find another new place called “Santa Cecilia”. It’s a small space, formerly occupied by a nail salon. Despite its size, they have made space for live music! They have a good menu of burgers, fries, chicken, coffee and desserts. It just opened, so I have not heard any reviews yet.

Just before the heavy construction on started south of the square on Rojo Gomez, a small cafe opened right across from the Mayan Handicraft Market in a space that was occupied by La Parilla in 2017. We have not seen the cafe open lately, so we are not sure if they are still there, or they are just keeping a low profile until the road construction stops. We never saw a sign, but we think it is called “Cacao”. We’ll keep an eye on it and report back to you.

On a recent neighbourhood stroll, we saw signs going up on the old “Pancho Villa” restaurant site on Niños Héroes. El Sazón Mexicano is already advertising burgers, tortas, gringas and Tacos Al Pastor…which are three of my favourite words EVER, so having this place so close to home may work out nicely. No idea when they are opening, but I would bet soon.

We also noticed that folks are renovating the old Don Mexkal location on Rojo Gomez, which Mexkal moved from a couple of months ago. I was thinking that it was yet another new restaurant, but in fact, it will be the new location of an existing one; Panna e Cioccolato. Famous for their gelato and other cool desserts, they will move into the space soon, moving out of their old location on the north side of the square. They tell us they will they will close the current place on May 2 and hope to be open and serving up treats in the new location on May 4.

In other big restaurant news, La Sirena finally opened its long awaited rooftop bar. With great views of the lighthouse, the ocean and the centro, it has quickly become the place to be in town. In other La Sirena news, they are now open for breakfast every morning except Tuesday. Hosted by the affable Richard “Rickie Ricardo”, you will find a variety of breakfast treats including Huevos Rancheros, fresh healthy juices made to order, and mimosas. They open for breakfast at 7:30 am.

Two local entrepreneurs have teamed up and created something new on Niños Héroes. Jorie, the creative force behind “Finders Keepers PM” and the Saturday Markets has joined forces with Louise who opened the Aarom Cafe and Wellness Centre at the beginning of the season. Together they are “Finding Om”. They have done an amazing job on the place and even created a lovely “quiet space” garden in the back. The shop is full of locally sourced art, gifts, foods and more. The cafe has coffee, juices, smoothies, breakfast bowls, Buddha bowls, and more with all ingredients organic and found locally. The wellness centre has massage, Reiki, and other holistic treatments as well as yoga in private or small group sessions. They are open every weekday except Thursday from 8:00 to 8:00, Saturdays 8:00-3:00, Sundays 9:00-3:00. They promise lots of activities and events, even during the summer months.

Cancun hits middle age

The city of Cancun is just 48 years old this year. The city’s official founding date was April 20, 1970. It started with just nine hotels, financed by the Mexican government. The city now has 37,300 rooms and an average occupation of 79.8 percent for the end of 2017. It also recorded a record number of tourists, exceeding 5 million last year for the first time with the airport counting 23 million passengers.

The State Tourism Secretariat is reporting that they will add 8,622 additional rooms between Cancun and Puerto Morelos in the next year. 5,155 of those will be built in the Cancun Hotel Zone.

The photo above is from 1975 and was taken from the Hyatt Hotel. For all its glamour and party atmosphere, we just think of it as the city with our airport and our Costco.

Congratulations to Anne and Allan Elliott who celebrated 50 years of marriage recently in Puerto Morelos. Anne and Allan have been coming to PM for many years and are well known for giving back generously to the community. I think they have also tried every restaurant in town! Felicidades!

18. March 2017 · Comments Off on Puerto Morelos Services

We are providing this list of local services for your convenience. If you patronize any of these businesses, please tell them you heard about them on the “In Puerto Morelos” website. It makes us more popular around town. (Updated March 2021)

Arriving at the Airport – If you are wondering what it is like to arrive at the Cancun Airport and how to get to Puerto Morelos from there, we have the complete rundown here.

ATM (ABM-Cashpoint-Bank Machine) – Best to use bank-affiliated machines as they have the lowest fees. The only bank-affiliated ATMs on the beachside of Puerto Morelos are in the new Chedraui south of the square. You will find two there, a Scotiabank machine and a Citi-Banamex machine.  The Scotiabank machine normally has higher fees.

There are several machines on the square and in the OXXO’s, but all are privately owned and thus have higher than normal fees.

There are two bank-affiliated machines in the Chedraui supermarket on the highway and a CI Banco machine just outside the grocery store. We find the CI Banco machine has the lowest fees and is safe, as it is only open when the bank is open (9:00-9:00 Monday-Saturday-closed Sunday). In the same plaza as Chedraui, there are four Banorte machines in a small storefront. Also a good option. There is another machine at the Bancomer in Super Aki Plaza and another in the 7-11 by the Pemex.

There have been some skimming incidents in Puerto Morelos, so please examine the machine carefully for any tampering before using and watch your account afterward for any suspicious transactions. Cover your pin when you type it in and change your pin as soon as you get home.

Bank – Puerto Morelos has no bank in the main part of town. Your best bet for getting pesos is a bank machine. On the port side, we recommend the two inside the Chredraui Selecto. The Scotiabank machine has higher fees of the two. There is a CI Banco bank at the highway Chedraui, a storefront in the Chedraui plaza offering four Banorte machines and a BBVA Bancomer bank with machines at Super Aki Plaza.

If you have foreign cash and want to exchange it for pesos, there is a small exchange on the square and another on the beachside of Chedraui Selecto. There is also a G Capital at the AKI Plaza on the highway and CI Banco has a bank just outside the Chedraiu highway location. You will need your passport to exchange cash at banks or money exchanges.

Baby Rentals – This local company rents baby/child equipment here in PM, so you don’t have to lug it from home! Rent cribs, Pack & Plays, high chairs, baby seats, strollers, life vests, even toys & games. Items are delivered and picked up at the location of your choice. Puerto Baby Rentals. Check out their website for more information.

Bike Rental – The Puerto Morelos Travel Agency has a tiny office around the corner west of the bookstore. They rent bikes by the hour, day, week or month. There are also bikes available at Puerto Morelos Green Bikes, website here. Lighthouse Tours has locations on Rojo Gomez near the square and across from Hotel Gota del Sol.

Electric Bike Rental – Spyder Cafe on Rojo Gomez has electric bikes & “choppers” for rent. Lighthouse Tours has electric scooters through Two Tired Scooter Rentals

Bookstore – There are precious few bookstores in the Yucatan, so Alma Libre Bookstore is a rare find. They have a huge selection of books including new books on the area, the Maya and the birds and fish…plus lots of used fiction and nonfiction books. Maps & postcards & art & gourmet items too!

Botanical Garden Ya’ax Che – Located on the south entrance to Puerto Morelos. Open daily at 8:00. The admission charge is around 120 pesos. More info here.

Car Rental –  If you are going to use the car a lot, you are best to get it at the airport when you arrive. If you just want it for a day or two, we have options right in town. Claudia at the Puerto Morelos Travel Agency rents for Thrifty and has a great reputation in town. Her office is just past Cafe Amancia, across from the OXXO. MAP

Europcar has an office in Puerto Morelos beside the church.

Catering – Chef Miguel co-owner of Hola Asia restaurant will provide meals to your place in Puerto Morelos or Playa Secreto. He also offers cooking classes in your place. Click here for more information. Richard of Mi Cocina does catering, as does Anthony at La Sirena.

Cooking Schools – How better to bring a little of Mexico home with you than to learn to make some of the fantastic food you find here?

Mexico Lindo Cooking offers culinary experiences at their beautiful facility in the jungle 10 kilometres from the town square. Prepare a 7-course gourmet meal, and feel like a member of the family during this small-group experience. Once all the food is cooked, celebrate your culinary accomplishment with a traditional Mexican fiesta, complete with drinks, tequila shots and music. They have a variety of classes available or even culinary trips. More details on their website.

Dentist – Dr. Carlos Escalante has an office just west of the square. 998-206-9157 NEXTEL 185-2583 Website Here. We’ve used him ourselves and would recommend him. He speaks excellent English. People have also recommended Dr. Georgina Reyes Herrera, office in the Colonia 998-251-7595/998-169-3559

Diving – We love to snorkel, but diving is the best way to go meet the fish. We are lucky to have several good shops right in town to serve you. If you are staying at a resort, skip their dive shop and use one of the ones in town, you will save a plethora of pesos. For more info click here

Fishing – We always recommend Kathy Loretta of Puerto Morelos Fishing. She has the best boats and crew. Daytime phone 998-848-8819. Evening phone 998-206-9206. Cell Phone 998-201-9805. She speaks English and Spanish. Alternatively, you can go down to the dock and talk to one of the captains there or arrange something through one of the dive shops. You can also arrange snorkelling this way.

Golf – I’ve never had the bug, but I know there are some of you who need to swing the wrenches even on vacation. Here are a few courses near PoMo.

  • Mayan Palace golf course. Closest to PoMo (14kms), just south of town near Playa Secreto. Website.
  • Iberostar golf course. Just a little further south. More info.
  • Mayakoba El Camaleón Golf Club. About 22 kms south, this course, designed by Greg Norman, hosts an annual PGA tournament. Website.

Grocery Store –  Just a few years ago, Puerto Morelos had no real grocery store, now we have three.

If you are staying close to the ocean on the “port side” of town, you can use the new Chedraui Selecto store just south of the square. It is smaller than the grocery store on the highway but should cover most of your needs. It has a pharmacy, a bakery, a good wine and beer section, a humidor for cigars and a cafe/restaurant section. We recommend patronizing our local independent restaurants for your meals, but the Chedraui will come in handy for groceries.

A larger Chedraui is located on the highway. It has a larger selection than the port side store and it has trustable ATMs in and around it.

There is also another grocery store a little further north on the same road called Super Aki. Aside from a few beautiful beer sales, there is nothing you can find at Aki that you can’t find at Chedraui, so if you only go one place, go there.

There is an abundance of small “Supers” (convenience stores) all over town, most with beer. There is also an OXXO convenience store on the southwest end of the square and another at the entrance to town. Alma Libre Books & Gifts has a selection of locally made gourmet items, coffee, honey, chocolate and more.

There is a small, but good Produce Store on Ninos Heroes across from Siempre Sano restaurant, just north of the laundromat. Fresh produce, juice, eggs and other staples available. They open early at 6:00 am. You can watch him make fresh juice all day. You cannot get it any fresher!

The Wednesday morning Produce Market by the Church and the many produce trucks that roll through town will keep you in fruits and vegetables. The fish co-operative on the square has the best and freshest fish anywhere. Mariscos del Puerto on Av. Ninos Heroes has frozen fish, shrimp and steak. They are open Monday-Friday 9-5 and Saturday/Sunday 9-3. A bakery truck rolls through town every evening at dusk with baked treats. For more grocery selection, Playa del Carmen and Cancun both have Sam’s Club, Chredaui, Mega, Wal-Mart and Soriana. Cancun also has Costco.

There are 2 very good produce markets located in the Colonia. These markets specialize in fresh fruit and vegetables.  We especially like the fresh squeezed orange juice for around $15-$25 pesos/litre. (look in the big white cooler for a variety of juices.) They also have fresh meats, chicken, pork and other items next door.  You never know quite what you are going to find, so they are definitely worth checking out.  The first store is located 3 blocks behind the Pemex, on the corner of the road that runs beside the Pemex and the wide street.  The second location is one or two blocks further west (toward Villas Morelos).  If you ask the bus or taxi driver to take you to Chulim, they will be able to help you find them. There are a couple of larger grocery stores there too. See our Puerto Morelos map for exact locations.

Gym – There are at least two, both on the other side of the highway.

  • Alligator’s Gym is located right on the highway just south of Super Aki. Open daily, except Sunday.
  • El Gym del Puerto is in the Colonia, Calle Trasatlántico Mz 25 lt.2 Villas Morelos 1. Open daily except Sunday. M-F 6:30-10:30. Saturday 7:00-1:00. Tel: 998 147 9128

Handicrafts – For sure you should check out the Mayan Handicraft Centre located around the corner from the bookstore on the main road, across from Spaghettino restaurant. Mauricio’s hammocks are located there among other shops. There are also many places around the square and Tesoros Mayas just south of OXXO on the square. Also, check out our selection in our gift section at the bookstore.

Hardware – There are a couple of stores on the highway, I have had the best luck with Ferrotlapaleria “La Colonia” or Tauro in the Colonia. You need to know how to ask for what you want as the products are behind the counter. Prepare to act out what you want. I have imitated taking a shower many times to get a shower part. Don’t ask how I get toilet parts. Cancun & Playa del Carmen have a Home Depot stores, which is surprisingly well equipped and feature some of the worst and loudest in-store music you will ever hear.

Internet – Stay in touch with loved ones…or just rub it in that you are in paradise and they are not! There is one internet cafe in town, beside the OXXO on the square, Cafe de Amancia has machines and printers and there is also free WiFi with purchase at several restaurants.

Mail – The Mexican postal system leaves much to be desired. It is not quick, but reasonably accurate. Good for sending postcards. Not good for sending vital time-sensitive materials. For that, we have fax, email and FedEx. Lovely Puerto Morelos postcards are available at Alma Libre Bookstore, they will mail them for you if you buy them there.  Otherwise, best to mail them at the airport.

Money Exchange  – We now have two on the port side of town. The exchange rate is posted above the window. G Capital is located in the mall part of the new Chedraui Selecto and the other is located in the mall on the north side of the square. They will not cash traveller’s cheques. If you are changing US dough, you need to show your passport. It’s not their policy, it is federal law. Count your change. The booth on the square has in the past been accused of short-changing. You likely get a better rate at CI Banco beside the Chedraui grocery store.

Newspaper – The local English newspaper is the “USA Today Cancun Edition” which comes out daily. It is available at several locations around town including Alma Libre Bookstore. As an alternative, pick up one of the local Spanish language dailies. Some of them are quite outrageous and have lots of pictures, some of them quite tasteless. In Playa del Carmen and Cancun you will be able to find other papers like the New York Times.

Perito Traductora – The Mexican government may require you to have officially translated documents if you are applying for visas etc. You can’t just have anyone translate the documents for you, they must be approved by the state. Catherine Gray from Felipe Carrillo Puerto is now an official translator for English/Spanish or Spanish/English. Costs for this service depend on the work, but her rates are lower than can be found in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Contact us for her contact information.

Pharmacies –  We have a ton of them now! On the port side alone we have Chedraui, the Farmacia on the square (west side),  and Farmacia de Similares (beside Budget just south of the OXXO on Ninos Heroes.) There are several more options at the highway (Chedraui, YZA, Paris, Express) and in the Colonia.

Rental Accommodations – See our list

Restaurants – See our lengthy list

Snorkeling – Our main attraction in Puerto Morelos is our Federally protected healthy reef which attracts thousands of fish, creatures and plant life. There are a variety of ways to book a snorkel trip, the easiest is just to head down to the dock and catch the next boat going out. It’s a quick boat ride to the reef and they should take you to two different locations. Cost is about 25 USD or peso equivalent, which includes Park admission. Make sure you receive a wristband. The money from the sale of the band goes to protect the reef. All the guides are trained. If the guide “Charlie Brown” is available, go with him. He’s a special guy. You can also arrange a trip through one of the Dive Shops or with Diving Dog Tours.

Spanish Lessons – A little Spanish goes a long way here. Give it a try! For private or semi-private classes, try Marilu and Victor. I don’t want to publish their email address here because of spam, so write to us and we’ll send it to you. They get excellent reviews and teach all levels.

Spa Services – Your hotel will have all kinds of spa services, but for a real local experience, try the Jungle Spa. Skilled local Mayan women will treat you at a price that is much, much lower than your hotel. Full treatments are offered Tuesday through Saturday, limited appointments on Sunday during the season. Appointments can be arranged other times. The spa is easy to reach by taxi or car. Website Here. Map to the spa here.

Martina who lives in Puerto Morelos offers Massage, Body, Facial and Esthetic Treatments. She will come to you. Contact her through her website.

Manicures and pedicures can be booked at Aquarius, on Avenue Ninos Heros north of the square. The staff does not speak English, but they are very kind and welcome visitors. You can also get this service from Carmen in the Colonia. Her shop is called “Glamour”, it is on our Puerto Morelos map.

Telephone – To call locally or back home, your best bet is Skype or another online calling program. You can also get a Ladatel Telmex card and use it in one of the pay phones around town. Local calls are about a peso a minute and long distance to the US or Canada is about 5 pesos a minute. The cards never expire. There are a variety of discount calling cards available, but we have never had any luck with them. More info here

Tours – Former Puerto Morelos shrimp taco magnate Eric is now designing and conducting tours of our area. Small groups ensure a better experience than your hotel can offer. Reviews are very good. Website Here. The travel agency also books tours.

Travel Agency – Located around the corner from Cafe de Amancia. Offers tours plus car and bike rentals. Website Here. Be aware that there are “fake” travel agencies that are just fronts for timeshare sales. You can save big money on tickets, but you will have to go to a presentation, usually three hours.

Yoga – Lots of options for yoga in Puerto Morelos

  • Mina Wigueras has yoga classes on the beach three times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:15 am. Meet up in front of PlayaSol. 50 pesos.
  • During the season there is yoga at Abbey del Sol, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:15
  • Melissa has yoga classes, contact her through her Facebook page.
  • Casa Om – Contact them through their webpage.
  • Coco does advanced yoga Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:00 am in the gazebo on the square. Contact her through her webpage.

Zoo – Crococun is just north of town on the east side of the highway. Kids will love it…and adults will too. Telephone: 998-850-371
