We hope that everyone had a great holiday season! 2020 has just begun In Puerto Morelos but we already have some news for you from your favourite town.

The best news of all is that Santa brought us a great gift, a beautiful beach on Christmas day! This is the beach just north of town, absolutely pristine! Merry Christmas to us!

In restaurant news, two new places have opened since our last update. First is Habacuc’s Bistro a new breakfast and lunch place. It’s owned and operated by the same people that bring you the hugely popular El Campanario, and it’s named after the patriarch of the family (seen here fourth from the left.) We were lucky enough to be invited to the grand opening and get a sampling of their fare. The menu is extensive, with breakfast favourites like chilaquiles, enchiladas and eggs as you like. Lunch features salads, soups, sandwiches and more. Be sure to leave room for dessert! They have a whole list of choices to tempt you. Habacuc’s Bistro is easy to find. They are located on the second floor (in the old Richard’s Bistro/Maximo location) between the two Frida’s on the north side of the port town square. They are open for breakfast and lunch (8 am until 6 pm) Tuesday to Sunday.

Also new is MEM Ristoranteria & Liquoreria, located across from Al Chimmichuri (in the old La Rambla location). MEM is a new concept restaurant for Puerto Morelos. This is how they described their place to us, “No menú and only one dish, everything included. A new concept that includes fish and veggies. To test to believe.” Early reviews of MEM are good. They already have restaurants in Italy and Spain. We recognized their logo from past trips to Barcelona.

We try to keep you as up to date as can on the eateries in Puerto Morelos with our handy PM Restuarant Guide. With that in mind, we have a couple of closures to tell you about. Chef Pablo’s La Mar Cafè that was located in the Super Aki Plaza has closed.

The other closure is Taqueria Los Tocayos, they were next to Chedraui Selecto. Bad timing for them as they were open during the entire quiet offseason, but closed just before Christmas, so close to our main tourist season here In Puerto Morelos.

In celebrity news, where do the stars go to dine when they are In Puerto Morelos? La Sirena of course! Recently Giancarlo Esposito who you may know as Gustavo ‘Gus’ Fring or the Chicken Man, one of the best “bad guys” EVER, from the hit series “Breaking Bad” stopped in for lunch. (No word on whether he ordered the chicken) La Sirena staff and owner Anthony were thrilled!

And that’s it for our latest update. We hope to see you In Puerto Morelos soon! Don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss out on any of our blog posts. And if you are looking for a vacation rental, be sure to contact us.

We are excited to announce a new partnership between InPuertoMorelos.com and Croco Cun Zoo! This means savings for you on your next visit to the park.

Did you know that Puerto Morelos has it’s very zoo? And this is not your typical zoo, it is an interactive zoo.

When you visit the park, you and your party are matched up with a knowledgable, English-speaking guide who takes you through the area, introducing you to the animals that live here in the Yucatan.

You get a very close-up and very personal look at the critters that are normally out of sight. All of the guides are professionally trained and graduates of either zoology or veterinary programs.

Not only is Croco Cun a zoo, but it is also a rehabilitation and breeding centre for the animals of our area.

The zoo is home to more than 200 crocodiles. The animals that live in the park are all ones that are unable to live in the wild or on their own for various reasons.

We here at InPuertoMorelos.com have started a partnership with Croco Cun Zoo so that we can bring you a special discount the next time you visit the park. Just show this coupon, either off your phone or printed when buying your tickets at the park or use the promo code InPuertoMorelos.com when buying online. Everyone in your party will receive a 10% discount off the entrance fee.

Take a walk on the wild side and learn a little more about the animals in our area. Croco Cun Zoo is open EVERY DAY from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, even Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. For more information click here.

If you would like to offer our readers a discount at your business, please contact us.

SPECIAL NOTE: Croco Cun is also looking for help to feed the animals while they remain closed due to Covid-19. They ask that you help by buying tickets in advance or donating directly.

13. December 2019 · Comments Off on Good-Bye USA TODAY Cancun · Categories: Beach Reads The Blog
The Original Staff of the Miami Herald International Edition

Today we say good-bye to an old friend, the Cancun edition of the newspaper USA Today. This is the only daily, English language newspaper printed in the state of Quintana Roo. Originally, it was the Miami Herald International Edition, but the paper changed affiliation in January 2009.

Unfortunately, like so many other print papers, the subscribership of this publication has slowly dwindled to the point where it is no longer viable. So today we say adios and wish the editor, Kathy Loretta, along with Rudy Garcia and Tere Carpinelli and the rest of the staff all the best. Kathy always made a point of featuring her home town of Puerto Morelos prominently in the paper.

Good luck to you all as the last full publication of the broadsheet rolls off the presses.

Here comes Part 3, another installment of our Town Update for the Winter of 2019. If you missed the other parts you can find Part 1 here or Part 2 here.

In Part 1 we mention that 4 new restaurants were opening soon. Well, two of them just opened their doors. One is Crepe Street, located on Rojo Gomez, right across from The Godfather jewelry store near the square. It features, (what else?), crepes. They have both sweet and savoury. Insider tip: Crepe Street is brought to you by the same people that bring you La Sirena.

Another place that has just opened is called Osteria Barocca and is located in the just-about-to-open hotel called Soho Boutique Puerto Morelos on Niños Héroes, which is part of a Spanish chain of hotels you can learn more about here. The restaurant menu is Italian and includes pasta, pizza, risotto and other favourites.

One more restaurant will open soon on the roof of the same hotel. That menu will be Thai. Chefs from both restaurants are from the high-end Grand Velas Hotel. All of this is located on Niños Héroes, across the street from John Gray’s Kitchen.

And yet another new restaurant that has just opened beside the church called Maria Bonita Restaurante. Their menu and decor is all Mexican and they are open at 9:00 am for breakfast and go right through until 9:00 pm.

And speaking of John Gray’s Kitchen, Dora has given the place a fresh new look over the summer. Be sure to stop by and check it out. And remember they are a great place for breakfast & lunch, as well as dinner.

That’s a lot of new places, and we still know of at least two more that are about to open. More about that in a future Beach Reads edition.

Closures

Over the summer we lost a few restaurants: Bianco, La Rambla and El Papillon. One of our favourite little afternoon beer stops, Ole, in la Colonia closed as well as the popular Chilpayas (it was immediately replaced by a new place with the same menu called Escochin.) The bar Que Hora Es in Posada Amor closed as well as the hotel itself. Plus for a very brief time, we had a G Capital cash exchange on the east side of the Chedraui Selecto. It opened and closed in record time.

Moves

Over the summer quite a few of your favourite places moved. El Sazón Mexicano that used to be on Niños Heroes is now in La Colonia. You can now find them here!

And personable Chef Pablo has moved his cafe to La Colonia as well. It is now called La Mar Cafè and it is located here on the south side of the Super Aki mall. Pablo is also offering Mexican Cooking Classes at Home.

Oishii Puerto Morelos has moved from Rojo Gomez to Niños Heroes, you can find them here still offering up Sushi and other Japanese food.

To keep up with all the restaurants, be sure to review our InPuertoMorelos.com Restaurant Guide. We update it constantly, it has all the contact info and hours and also features a printer friendly version.

Good-Byes

Manuel as we will always remember him. Cooking and smiling. Photo from Facebook

And we say good-by to two people who were fixtures in the town. Manuel May Moguel who was the proprietor, chef and head beer slinger at Ole’s in la Colonia. Manuel was always quick with a wave and a smile whenever we saw him. Our thoughts go out to his family.

Kimberly in her beloved garden. Photo courtesy of Facebook

The town lost another one of its long-time residents, Kimberly Fleitz or Rev Kim, as many people knew her. She was a frequent customer in the bookstore and she used to tell us stories about what Puerto Morelos was like when she first came here back in the ’80s. Her favourite tale was about when the circus used to come to town and they let her ride the elephant down the main street. The story did end with her falling off and breaking a couple of bones, but she would tell it laughing so hard (in only a way that Kimberly could) she would almost cry. Kimberly, you will be missed, but not forgotten. Descansa en Paz.

So that concludes our Winter 2019 update on the port side of our town. We will have more updates that include la Colonia soon, so to find out what is happing InPuertoMorelos SUBSCRIBE today to Beach Reads InPuertoMorelos.com, We keep you up to date on your favourite beach village and plus we have some great new partnership programs coming up which will offer our subscribers discounts in our town.

This is Part 2 of our Town Update. If you missed Part 1 click here.

A quick update from Part 1, the fire truck that was making its way from Alberta, with a long delay at the US/Mexican border, finally zoomed into town late on Saturday night. The final push through Mexico did not go too smoothly as they had alternator problems, but with some help from fellow first responders, some extra crowd-funding on Friends of Puerto Morelos and some creative ingenuity, they made it safe and sound. For a video of their arrival, click here.

Puerto Morelos and the fire truck story also made the local news in Edmonton, the whole city has been waiting for this truck to be delivered! Click here for a story the local Global TV station posted on Sunday night.

Now let’s talk more about restaurants, specifically the changes to the ones on the south side of the square. This is an area you may not always venture to… but you should. There are a lot of great places are more pop up every year.

One of your long-time favourite places has moved a just little further south. Spaghettino is now one block south of where it used to be. It is still just past Chedraiu, but now closer to El Campanario. The new location is very nice and you can expect the same great food.

Right across the street from Spaghettino and next to El Campanario is a new taco place called Ta Ki To. As you might expect, they specialize in tacos. So if you are looking for fast, fun and filling, check them out.

Also, Café Mar de Niebla has moved… and when we say “moved”, we mean it! They actually moved the entire building! You may remember, the cafe used to be behind the taxi stand on the main town square. Now it is in front of the Mayan Handicraft centre and across from Spaghettino. They sell coffee and ice cream, two of our favourite things!

In the same area, DK will be opening again soon. They tell us that they are just getting the band back together after a long summer break and then they will be serving up the same wonderful food & drink with an Asian flair. (Try the Bruce Lee if you dare)

The folks at Lola y Moya have a very pretty new location with some lovely murals. They are just 40 meters north of where they used to be. They still have the same great specialty coffees and tasty daytime treats. They are open now, but make sure to join them for their grand re-opening on Saturday, December 7th at 8:00 am.

And last but not least, there is a new place in town for tacos and beer. It is called Taqueria Los Tocayos and it is located on the east side of the Chedraui Selecto across from Hacienda Morelos. We have not heard any reports yet, so check them out and let us know!

Ok, enough about restaurants for now… Another change you will find is that there may be a few more holes in the streets of PM and some folks digging more of them. This is thanks to Aguakan, the water company as they are hooking more homes to the sanitary sewer system. We’ve all been on septic systems on the north end of town up to now. This will probably not change anything for visitors to our town. Most places will still not want you to flush your toilet paper because the plumbing can’t handle it, but the good news is, it will be much better for our beach and environment.

Speaking of the environment… plastic bags are no longer being given out in any of the Puerto Morelos grocery stores. It is now up to you to bring your own or for the place, you are renting from to supply them as we do at Casa de los Viajeros. 🙂

So that is it for Part 2 of our town update. Watch for Part 3 coming soon! Don’t miss a post! SUBSCRIBE today to Beach Reads InPuertoMorelos.com, We keep you up to date on your favourite beach village.

Some things in Puerto Morelos never change. The streets stay mostly quiet, the fish keep swimming in the reef and the lighthouse still leans. There have been quite a few changes over the summer in Puerto Morelos though, so let’s dive right into what is new and notable in your favourite Mexican town.

DON’T MISS OUR PUERTO MORELOS RESTAURANT GUIDE

At this time of year, a lot of new restaurants pop up, change or move, and this season is no exception. We have news about a lot of places, so we will tell you about them over a course of a few blog posts, so as not to give you restaurant fatigue. If you want to cut right to the chase you can visit our Puerto Morelos Restaurant Guide that we are constantly updating.

Over the spring and summer, extensive renovations changed the former Cancun Billy’s space into the upscale Mar-Bella Fish Market Resturant. The transformation is beautiful and made good use of its seafront location. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because this restaurant is part of a small chain that also has locations in Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Their focus is seafood, but the concept may be a little different from what you are used to. You order what you want by weight, and then you choose how they prepare it. Early reviews are very good, with high praise for food and service. Reviewers do note that the prices are on the high side.

Sadly the long-time PM institution Las Palmeras has closed. Palmeras had been around in some form since we first came to Puerto Morelos over 17 years ago. It has been replaced with Boquinete Seafood and Grill. They have a great location on the beach just south of the town square, so this is a place worth checking out. We hear rumours of lobster tacos! Sounds muy yum.

These are just two of the many new restaurants that have opened over the summer, and there are many more. We also know of at least four more places that are about to open soon. So don’t forget to subscribe to our newsletter so you don’t miss all the news.

November 2019

Another one of the other big changes in town has been the construction of “The Fives”, a large multi-story hotel/condo complex that is being built on four lots which once housed the grand home locally known as “The Taj Mahal” at the end of Rojo Gomez. You can find out more about the house here, and the new complex (which was locally protested to no avail) here.

Sadly, there was also a palapa fire at Moonlight Condos (see video here) earlier this week on the morning of Sunday, November 24, 2019. No one was hurt and the fire was mostly contained to the top floor of the building. The owners say they will reopen soon. The town’s new red fire truck did respond to the fire. This is the first of two firetrucks for Puerto Morelos. The second (yellow) one is currently on its way south from Canada. They just crossed the US/Mex border yesterday! It’s been a long journey! You can find out the whole story here. And watch their progress through Mexico as Chris keeps us up to date with his posts to Friends of Puerto Morelos on Facebook.

November 2019

Over the summer sargasso barriers were put in place, and these along with the right currents have brought our beaches back to their gorgeous normal. See for yourself by looking at the various local webcams available that show you a live shot of our beach. Warning, staring at the webcams may also make you want to book a trip to PM!

The city has also dropped anchors near the shore for the fishing boats to tie up to when they dock for the night. This means our beach is now clear of ropes for the first time. No more tripping over them! Nicer for walking along the beach and the area in front of the Malecon has never looked better.

So this is just the start of our InPuertoMorelos.com town updates. Watch for Part 2 coming soon! Don’t miss a post! SUBSCRIBE today to Beach Reads InPuertoMorelos.com. We will keep you up to date on your favourite beach village. Hasta Pronto!
